The Effect of Atenolol on the Exercise Capacity in Patients with Mild Essential Hypertension



Abstract
To evaluate the long-term effects of atenolol on the exercise capacity, a single oral 100mg dose of atenolol was given to 11 patients with uncomplicated mild essential hypertension for 4 weeks. During graded treadmill exercise(IMC 3.5 Protocol stage 1 to 5) up to the points of voluntary maximal exercise capacity, the heart rate and systolic blood pressure were measured at each 3-min stage of exercise before and at 4 weeks after atenolol.
Heart rate and systolic blood pressure increased progressively with each successive exercise stage before and after atenolol, but significant reduction in the exercise induced increment of heart rate and systolic blood pressure were observed after atenolol treatment. The maximal exercise heart rate and systolic blood pressure were reduced by 15 and 11 %, respectively, but no significant change was observed in the maximal exercise endurance time. It is concluded that there is no evidence that chronic beta-adrenergic blockade with atenolol reduces exercise capacity athough exercise-induced tachcardia was reduced.
